Module 5 - COLREGs
Rule 8 — Action to Avoid Collision
Any action taken to avoid collision must be positive, made in ample time, and large enough to be readily apparent to the other vessel. Small, indecisive course changes are dangerous — the other vessel may not realise you are altering.
If there is sufficient sea room, a course alteration alone may be the most effective action. Monitor the result until the other vessel is finally past and clear, and make sure the alteration does not create a new close-quarters situation. Speed reduction, including stopping or reversing propulsion, is also available when appropriate.
- Action must be POSITIVE and EARLY
- Course changes must be LARGE enough to be obvious
- Monitor the action until the vessels are finally past and clear
- Reducing speed or stopping is always an option
