Module 17 - Marine Environment

Sewage and Waste Water

Discharge of untreated sewage is increasingly restricted. Many harbours and estuaries are 'no discharge' zones. Use holding tanks where fitted and pump out at designated facilities ashore.

If the vessel has a marine toilet (heads) that discharges directly, check local rules first and keep well away from shore, bathing waters, shellfish beds, enclosed waters, and environmentally sensitive areas.

  • Use holding tanks in harbours and coastal waters
  • Pump out at designated shore facilities
  • Check local rules for harbours, estuaries, inland waterways, and sensitive areas
  • Avoid direct discharge near shore, swimmers, shellfish beds, or enclosed waters
