What you will learn

Command an unfamiliar harbour approach as a sequence of evidence gates, with explicit roles, challenge-and-response reports and a protected hold or abort option.

Yachtmaster pilotage is not a longer cockpit card. It is the ability to keep the vessel, crew and navigation picture controlled when night, traffic, tide, visibility or machinery no longer match the plan.

Build one coherent con. State who has the con, who steers, who keeps the outside lookout, who monitors depth and position, and who handles communications or deck preparation. Use closed-loop reports: the crew member names the observation and reference, the skipper acknowledges its meaning, and the helm repeats the ordered change. Permission from port control manages movement; it does not prove that the water, traffic or manoeuvre is safe for this yacht.

At every commitment gate compare evidence that does not share the same failure. A chartplotter and a repeater using the same GNSS antenna, power supply or chart data are corroborating displays, not independent fixes. Add physical cues, depth trend, compass or bearing, time and distance, radar where fitted, and current local information. If two sources conflict, name the conflict and protect sea room while it is resolved.

Control speed to buy observation and decision time, but do not turn 'slower' into a universal answer. The vessel still needs steerage, must remain controllable in wind or stream, and needs enough power and room for the briefed escape. Expected time, depth and cue sequence are monitoring tolerances rather than targets to chase after a plan has started to fail.

Keep a gate closed when a material assumption changes. An obscured leading light, unexpected depth, departing ferry, reduced engine output or crew task overload requires the skipper to hold, abort or rebuild the route before commitment. Re-plan and rebrief the complete affected stage rather than silently changing one heading or waypoint.

Worked example

A night harbour approach has a 0.9 NM outer stage at 4.5 knots. The leading lights and an expected depth trend must be confirmed before the entrance gate.

  1. 1Calculate the stage expectation: 0.9 NM รท 4.5 kn = 0.2 hours = 12 minutes.
  2. 2At six minutes, about half the stage distance โ€” 0.45 NM โ€” is an expected progress check, not proof of position.
  3. 3Compare the timed expectation with the leading-light geometry, depth trend, compass or bearing, traffic picture and a position source that does not merely repeat the same GNSS input.
  4. 4If the evidence does not agree, reduce commitment: hold or abort in the briefed safe water, identify the failed assumption and re-plan before trying again.

Sense check: The arithmetic is internally consistent because 4.5 knots covers 0.9 NM in 12 minutes, but current, speed and manoeuvring can change the actual cue sequence. Time is supporting evidence, never a licence to enter.

Brief one command gate

The next stage begins only when the leading lights are identified, depth is above the briefed minimum and port traffic permits movement.

  1. 1. Cue

    The lookout reports the full light identity and alignment; the navigator reports depth trend and position evidence.

  2. 2. Limit

    State the latest safe holding position, minimum depth, traffic condition and engine response needed before commitment.

  3. 3. Command

    The skipper confirms the evidence, orders course and speed, and receives a closed-loop helm response.

  4. 4. Failure response

    A missing cue, conflicting source or changed vessel capability keeps the gate closed and triggers the briefed hold or abort route.

Sense check: A green movement signal can open the traffic gate, but the navigation gate remains closed until the route and yacht are safe.

Common mistake or limitation

  • Port-control permission is not a declaration that the route, depth or traffic is safe for this vessel.
  • Two screens using one antenna, power feed or chart database have a common-source failure and are not independent confirmation.
  • Reducing speed without protecting steerage or escape capability can exchange one hazard for another; use a vessel- and condition-specific safe speed.
  • A command brief is incomplete unless crew know the expected report, the decision limit and what to do when the evidence is absent.
