Advanced Scenario Check: Chafed Spring and Stronger Spare
A fictional 11-metre yacht is alongside an exposed berth in a strengthening crosswind. The after spring is snatching, its cover is glazed at a rough open fairlead and the yacht is surging aft. The line remains loaded. The crew have a low-stretch HMPE spare whose minimum breaking load exceeds the marked limit on the nearest deck cleat.
One crew member suggests tying a rolling hitch from the HMPE spare to the loaded spring, leading it to that cleat and winching hard. Another suggests cutting the spring before it parts. Neither proposal is release-ready. The hitch may not grip the dissimilar loaded line, the low-stretch spare can transmit snatch load, the stronger rope can overload the cleat and cutting can release stored energy violently.
The first command is to stop adding energy and keep people clear. Reduce controllable forcing and vessel movement with a briefed method suited to the yacht, communicate with shore and helm, and mark the entire working area as hazardous while the spring remains loaded. Nobody handles the bight, stands over the line or enters the likely rope, loop or fitting-failure paths.
Audit the original system and the proposed alternative. The glazed cover and rough fairlead require the line and cause to be assessed. The HMPE spare is not accepted merely because it is stronger: check its construction, condition, elongation, bend and termination requirements, the grip of any hitch, the complete lead and the capacity of each fitting. The marked cleat limit already blocks the proposed arrangement.
Choose a known compatible alternative line and suitable independent strong points, or change the wider plan. Prepare it while the original spring remains controlled, take up slack from a protected position, load it gradually and verify that it holds the yacht without slipping, snatching or changing lead. Only then ease and isolate the damaged spring. If that system cannot be built with the available equipment and margin, call for harbour assistance or leave the berth before conditions remove the option.
Continue monitoring after transfer. Correct the fairlead or lead, inspect the removed line against maker criteria and watch the replacement, fittings and vessel movement. Written revision cannot determine the exact rope, hitch, engine command or berth manoeuvre for a real yacht; those depend on current conditions, equipment and competent practical command.
