Module 2 - Ropework

Rope Care and Handling: Chafe, UV Damage and Safe Loads

Quick answer

Inspect yacht ropes for chafe, UV damage, stiffness, flat spots, and fraying. Wash salt out with fresh water and keep hands, feet, and clothing clear of loaded lines.

  • Replace ropes with damage at high-load points.
  • Never stand in a bight of rope.
  • Coil and store ropes dry, away from chemicals and sharp edges.

Inspect ropes regularly for chafe, fraying, and UV damage. Replace ropes that show signs of wear at loaded points. Wash ropes in fresh water after use in salt water to remove salt crystals that cause internal wear. Store ropes coiled or on reels, away from chemicals and sharp edges.

Never stand in a bight (loop) of rope — if the rope comes under load, it could trap or injure you. Always keep fingers and hands clear of winch drums and cleats when lines are under load.

Key points

  • Check for chafe, UV damage, and fraying regularly
  • Wash in fresh water after salt water use
  • Never stand in a bight of rope under load
  • Keep hands clear of winches and cleats under load

Common mistakes

  • Trusting a rope because the visible outer cover looks acceptable.
  • Standing in loops or bights while a line can load suddenly.
  • Letting salt and grit remain in working lines for long periods.

Tip: A sharp knife should always be carried on deck to cut a rope in an emergency — a jammed sheet or halyard can be dangerous.

Common questions

How do you inspect yacht ropes for damage?

Look and feel along the whole rope for chafe, flattened sections, hard spots, broken fibres, UV fading, melted areas and wear where the rope runs through blocks, fairleads or clutches.

Why should ropes be washed in fresh water?

Fresh water removes salt crystals and grit that can work inside the fibres and increase internal wear as the rope flexes under load.

What does standing in a bight of rope mean?

A bight is a loop of rope. Standing in it is dangerous because the loop can tighten suddenly if the line loads up.
