Module 18 - Signals & Communications
Yachtmaster revision outcome
Use Distress, Urgency and Safety Calls as an applied Yachtmaster decision, not just a definition list. The course outcome is that a Yachtmaster candidate can recognise the situation, choose a defensible action, and explain the check that supports it.
A paid revision product needs to build exam recall and cockpit judgement at the same time. Work this module by saying the cue, the risk, the calculation or rule if there is one, and the skipper action you would take before moving on.
What tells me this is a Distress, Urgency and Safety Calls problem?
Why it matters: Stops keyword guessing and forces context.
Which rule, calculation, symbol, or procedure changes my decision?
Why it matters: Turns memory into a skipper action.
What chart, almanac, forecast, instrument, or crew factor could change the answer?
Why it matters: Builds margin and avoids brittle exam-only recall.
What would I do now, and what would make me delay or stop?
Why it matters: Connects the course to Yachtmaster-level command judgement.
| Revision step | What to say aloud | Why it matters |

Key points
- Recognition cue: MAYDAY: grave and imminent danger.
- Decision cue: PAN-PAN: urgent situation, not immediate danger to life.
- Safety cue: SECURITE: safety, navigation, or weather warning.
- Revision standard: answer in plain English, then state the source or cross-check you would use on board.
