Module 20 - Special Situations Afloat

Skipper Priorities Under Pressure

In an emergency, the skipper's first job is to create time and options. Slow down, reduce sail, heave-to, anchor, increase sea room, or call for help if that improves control. Clear command matters: give short instructions, confirm they are understood, and avoid overloading one crew member.

A useful priority order is people, vessel, environment, then property. Keep a log of decisions, positions, weather, communications, and actions. If a situation may need outside help, call early. Rescue services can stand down easily; they cannot recover lost time.

  • Create time and options
  • People first, then vessel, environment, and property
  • Give clear crew roles
  • Keep a written log
  • Call early when outside help may be needed
