Worked Radar Closing Assessment
What you will learn
Calculate a relative closing rate from timed radar ranges, state the assumptions and use the result as an early collision-risk input rather than a wait-until-zero countdown.
A timed radar plot can turn a visual trend into a useful rate, but the calculation remains conditional on stable own motion, correct target identity, suitable observation intervals and continued monitoring.
A contact bears 045° relative at 6.0 NM. Three minutes later it still bears 045° relative but is at 5.0 NM. The near-constant relative bearing and decreasing range indicate collision risk. The range has closed by 1.0 NM in 3 minutes, which is 20 kn relative closing speed: 1.0 ÷ 0.05 hours = 20 kn. If that steady relative motion continued, 5.0 NM at 20 kn gives about 15 minutes to zero range.
That result is a screening calculation, not a licence to wait fifteen minutes. Bearing accuracy, own manoeuvres, target manoeuvres, sea clutter, target swap, heading error, and the short observation interval all affect the estimate. Continue a systematic plot at suitable intervals, compare relative vectors and trails, and use an appropriate range scale. A small apparent CPA created by noisy bearings should be treated conservatively until the trend is clear.
Before manoeuvring, identify whether the vessels are in sight and which COLREG rule set applies. Make an early, substantial action that produces a readily apparent change and leaves a safe passing distance, then monitor until finally past and clear. After the alteration, do not use the old CPA/TCPA as proof of success: allow the tracker to settle, observe the new relative track, and confirm that range at CPA is increasing as intended.
A Yachtmaster oral answer should state the evidence and the limitations: ‘Constant relative bearing, range reduced one mile in three minutes, about twenty knots closing, nominal zero-range time fifteen minutes if neither vessel manoeuvres. I would take early Rule-compliant action now, brief the helm and lookout, and verify the new CPA by repeated radar and visual observations.’
Worked example
With steady own course and speed, one target remains at approximately 045° relative while closing from 6.0 M to 5.0 M in three minutes.
- 1Range closed: 6.0 − 5.0 = 1.0 M.
- 2Elapsed time: 3 ÷ 60 = 0.05 hours.
- 3Relative closing speed: 1.0 ÷ 0.05 = 20 kn.
- 4Nominal zero-range time at the same relative motion: 5.0 ÷ 20 = 0.25 hours = 15 minutes.
- 5Continue systematic observations; determine the applicable COLREG rules, take early action where required and verify the new relative track afterwards.
Sense check: If own heading changed between relative-bearing observations, the bearing comparison must be corrected before drawing the same conclusion.
Brief the calculation and its limits
With own course and speed steady, the same target remains near 045° relative while range falls from 6.0 M to 5.0 M in three minutes.
1. State the observation
Range closed 1.0 M in three minutes and the relative bearing did not appreciably change.
2. Calculate the rate
Three minutes is 0.05 hours; 1.0 M ÷ 0.05 h = 20 kn relative closing speed.
3. Screen the time
At that unchanged rate, 5.0 M ÷ 20 kn = 0.25 h, or 15 minutes to nominal zero range.
4. Act and verify
Apply the correct COLREG situation, take timely action and build a new plot after the relative motion changes.
Sense check: Fifteen minutes is a conditional screening time, not permission to delay action or a reliable CPA by itself.
Common mistake or limitation
- Three minutes equals 0.05 hours, not 0.3 hours.
- Nominal zero-range time is not the same as a verified CPA or a safe time to wait.
- Relative bearings cannot be compared directly across an unaccounted own-heading change.
- A short plot contains target, bearing, range, acquisition and motion uncertainty.
