A Yachtmaster safety check is a decision process, not a tour of equipment lockers. Begin with vessel state, forecast and sea state, route exposure, crew capability, daylight, tidal constraints, communications, and escape options. Turn concerns into explicit gates: maximum forecast or observed conditions, minimum crew readiness, required navigation and propulsion systems, acceptable defects, and the latest time at which departure or continuation remains sensible.

Allocate safety-critical roles by capability. Every person needs a correctly fitted lifejacket appropriate to the operation, a clear route to the deck or survival equipment, and an understanding of alarms and muster. At least one other person should be able to stop the vessel, locate and read position, send distress traffic, start the engine where relevant, recover a person, and call the skipper. A briefing is incomplete until the person can point to the control or equipment and repeat the action.

Inspect systems in the order in which they protect life: watertight integrity and flooding control; fire detection, fuel shut-offs and extinguishing equipment; steering and propulsion; bilge alarms and pumps; lifejackets, tethers and recovery gear; distress alerting; first aid; navigation; and abandonment equipment. Confirm access under heel, darkness, smoke, water, and seasickness rather than assuming equipment remains reachable because it is on an inventory.

Record defects and compensating controls. A missing or degraded barrier can change the route, weather limit, crew requirement, daylight plan, or departure decision. Several small defects may combine into an unacceptable common failure: a weak battery, uncertain charging, damp handheld, and plotter-dependent position can remove navigation and distress communications together. ‘Legal to depart’ and ‘defensible to command’ are not identical tests.
