Coverage, Antennas and a Communications Failure Plan
What you will learn
Assess a VHF communication path by antenna height, installation, power, data and coverage, then brief an independent fallback appropriate to the passage.
A powered radio is not proof of usable range. VHF is principally line of sight, and common failures can remove the fixed set, GNSS input and several other systems together.
VHF is principally line of sight. Antenna height, terrain, vessel structure, sea state, transmitter power, cabling, and the receiving station affect range. A masthead fixed set usually reaches farther than a handheld close to deck level. The MCA's published A1 illustration assumes a vessel antenna four metres above sea level and explicitly notes that coverage is smaller for lower antennas and portable radios.
Check the installation before departure: the ship's call sign and MMSI match the licence and are programmed correctly, the GNSS position and time are current, the antenna and coaxial connections are sound, the handset can be reached, and the crew knows the controls. Test using an appropriate service without blocking a distress channel. Know whether the handheld is waterproof, charged, licensed for the intended operation, and stored where it remains available after flooding, fire, or dismasting.
Plan beyond the nominal range. Identify Coastguard coverage, harbour working channels, telephone or satellite alternatives, EPIRB or PLB provision, and how to alert another vessel. Keep essential numbers, MMSIs, call signs, and position formats accessible without the plotter. A mobile telephone can be useful but does not broadcast to nearby vessels and should not be treated as a complete substitute for marine distress communications.
When the fixed set fails, distinguish power, antenna, audio, data, and coverage faults. A powered display does not prove that the antenna path works. Try the independent handheld or backup power as appropriate, but do not let fault-finding distract from the vessel's immediate safety. Create sea room, send an alert while any path remains available, and brief a timed fallback: who retries, on which equipment, and what action follows if no contact is made.

Plan for a dismasting communication failure
The masthead antenna and coax may be lost after a rig failure. The fixed set still illuminates, a deck-level handheld is charged and a mobile telephone has intermittent coverage.
1. Diagnose the path
Separate power, antenna, audio, GNSS data and geographic coverage rather than calling the whole set ‘working’.
2. Use the independent equipment
Try the handheld or other appropriate alerting path from a safe position while recognising its lower antenna and range limits.
3. Set a timed fallback
Brief who retries, on which equipment, at what time and which vessel action follows if contact is not made.
Sense check: The fallback does not share the failed masthead antenna, suspect service battery or inaccessible stowage that disabled the primary path.
Common mistake or limitation
- A powered display does not prove that the antenna path works; separate power, antenna, audio, position data and coverage evidence.
- A charged handheld is not range-equivalent to a functioning masthead set; antenna height and line of sight matter strongly.
- The MCA A1 map is illustrative and assumes a four-metre vessel antenna; it is not a reception guarantee for a deck-level portable set.
- A mobile telephone does not broadcast to nearby vessels and is not a complete marine-distress substitute.
- A handheld DSC identity and licence have specific rules; do not assume the ship's fixed-set MMSI can be copied into any portable set.
