Module 20 - Special Situations Afloat
Flooding and Hull Breach
Flooding is time critical. Start pumps, find the source, assign crew to damage control, and prepare a distress call. Shut seacocks if a hose has failed. Use softwood bungs, collision mats, sails, cushions, clothing, or anything suitable to slow water entry.
If water is entering from a hull breach, reducing speed or changing heading may reduce pressure. Keep batteries and radios dry for as long as possible. Prepare the liferaft and grab bag early, but do not abandon until the vessel is more dangerous than the liferaft.
Key points
- Start pumps and find the source
- Close seacocks and use bungs
- Slow water ingress with mats or soft materials
- Protect power and communications
