Module 20 - Special Situations Afloat
Rig Failure and Jury Rig
A dismasting or major rig failure can injure crew, damage the hull, and foul the propeller. Account for the crew, stop the vessel if possible, keep clear of the rig, and check whether the mast or wire is threatening the hull. If necessary, cut the rig away, but only when it is unsafe to keep it.
If the rig is lost, preserve useful sails, spars, lines, and fittings where safe. A jury rig may be enough to stabilise the vessel or make slow progress. If motoring, make sure no lines or wires can foul the propeller. Show correct lights and shapes for the vessel's condition.
- Account for crew and treat injuries
- Prevent rig damage to the hull
- Keep lines and wire clear of the propeller
- Save useful gear only if safe
- Use jury rig or engine to reach safety if possible
