Module 20 - Special Situations Afloat

Towing and Being Towed

Towing loads can be extreme. Use strong points, a bridle where possible, long towlines for shock absorption, and chafe protection. Keep crew away from loaded lines and never stand in a bight. Agree signals, speed, route, and emergency release before the tow starts.

When being towed, steer to follow the towing vessel and avoid snatching. If towing another yacht, remember that stopping and turning take more room. In poor conditions, a professional tow may be safer than an improvised tow by another small vessel.

Key points

  • Use strong points and a bridle
  • Long towline reduces snatch loads
  • Rig chafe protection
  • Keep crew clear of loaded lines and bights
  • Agree communication and release plan
